BayFP Meeting Location for Oct 11: Powerset

Alex Jacobson has not only volunteered to present at the next meeting, he’s also arranged a location for us. We’ll be meeting at 7:30pm at the Powerset offices: 475 Brannan St. – San Francisco, CA 94107. We’ll be ordering pizza, so please RSVP.

Alex will be presenting Building Scalable Internet Applications in Haskell Using HAppS. His talk will cover:

  • a brief history of HAppS and why Haskell’s laziness, referential transparency, and type-system are important for these sorts of apps.
  • an outline of HAppS architecture
  • a tour through building a blogger like application using HAppS
  • an explanation of how HAppS can scale as needed.

Alex — thanks in advance for volunteering to present and for arranging the space. I’m really looking forward to it.

Hope to see everybody there.

Alex Jacobson has graciously agreed to present for our next BayFP meeting (Thursday, October 11th, 2007 @ 7:30pm) on Building Scalable Internet Applications in Haskell Using HAppS. We’re still hashing out the details on where exactly we’ll meet (sounds like San Francisco again), so stay tuned for that.

See you on the 11th!

First BayFP Meeting Recap

We had a great turnout at Amici’s last night for the first BayFP meeting.  The group was composed of those just starting with functional programming languages and those that are building frameworks in their language of choice; biologists and folks in business development; people hacking in fp languages for their day-jobs and those that do it on their own time only; people coming from the south bay, the peninsula, San Francisco as well as Sacramento.  Of course, everyone shared an enthusiasm for programming and doing it with functional languages.  The mix of people kept the conversations lively, and as the group expanded to close to thirty, it seemed that BayFP has struck some interest.

After an hour and a half of socializing and eating pizza, Keith reminded us that we had some business to attend to.  The first item was to set the schedule: the group decided on monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month (next one is October 11).  After that, he sent around a list to collect talk proposals.  He’s put that list online and you can vote for your topic preference for the next meeting.  If you want to give a presentation and aren’t listed, let Keith or me know.  And finally, he asked for people to volunteer if they can offer a place to hold a meeting with a presentation.  If you think you can, drop an email to either one of us.

All in all, an excellent time.  Thanks to all that joined us in eating pizza, talking functional programming, and offering up ideas for locations and talks.  Hope to see everyone at the next one.
